Overview

Trend following means trading in the direction of the prevailing trend. The trend is your friend. Identify trend with structure (higher highs, higher lows = uptrend) or moving averages. Enter on pullbacks to dynamic support (e.g. EMA) or structure. Cut losses quickly when trend breaks.

Identifying Trend

Use structure: uptrend = higher highs and higher lows; downtrend = lower highs and lower lows. Use moving averages: price above 50 EMA = uptrend; below = downtrend. ADX > 25 confirms trend strength. Multiple timeframes: higher timeframe trend filters lower timeframe entries.

Entry Rules

In uptrend: buy pullbacks to 20 or 50 EMA, or to support (previous low). In downtrend: sell rallies to 20 or 50 EMA, or to resistance. Wait for candlestick confirmation (bullish engulfing at support). Avoid counter-trend trades.

Risk Management

Stop below the swing low (uptrend) or above the swing high (downtrend). Or use ATR-based stops. Risk-reward typically 1:2 or more. Trend following often has lower win rate but larger winners.

Common Mistakes

Fighting the trend: only trade with it. Entering without pullback: chasing can lead to poor entries. Ignoring trend strength: trade when ADX confirms. Overtrading in chop: wait for clear trend.

FAQ

Common questions about this topic.

What is the best indicator for trend following?

Moving averages (20, 50 EMA), ADX for strength, and price structure. Combine for confirmation.

How do I enter a trend without chasing?

Wait for pullbacks to the EMA or support/resistance. Enter on bounce confirmation.

What is ADX in trend following?

ADX measures trend strength (not direction). ADX > 25 = strong trend. Use to filter—only trade when ADX is rising.

Does trend following work in ranging markets?

No. Trend following loses in chop. Use ADX or structure to identify when a trend exists.
